It's the first question almost everybody asks us, and it's a fair one. The honest answer is that tree removal in Tallahassee doesn't come with a flat sticker price, because no two trees are the same. That said, we can give you a real sense of what to expect and, more importantly, what makes the number go up or down.
For most homeowners around here, a straightforward removal lands somewhere between a few hundred dollars for a small ornamental tree and a few thousand for a large oak or pine that's close to the house. The really big, complicated jobs — think a massive live oak that needs a crane and a full day of careful work — cost more. But the vast majority of yards fall in the middle.
The single biggest factor is size. A thirty-foot crape myrtle and an eighty-foot loblolly pine are completely different animals. The taller and heavier the tree, the more rigging, equipment, and time it takes to bring it down safely.
Location is the next big one. A tree standing alone in an open backyard is easy — we can often drop it in sections without much fuss. But a tree wedged between your house and the fence, or one tangled up near a power line off Mahan Drive, takes slow, careful work to avoid damaging anything. That care costs money, and it's money well spent.
Then there's access. If we can get a bucket truck or a crane right up to the tree, the job goes faster. If everything has to be carried by hand through a narrow side gate, that adds time. Condition matters too — a dead, brittle tree is actually more dangerous and unpredictable to remove than a healthy one, which can affect the approach.
Every now and then someone will get a suspiciously cheap quote from a guy with a chainsaw and a pickup. Sometimes that works out fine. Often it doesn't. The cheapest crews are usually the ones cutting corners on insurance, and if an uninsured worker gets hurt in your yard or drops a limb through your roof, you can end up holding the bill. We always recommend asking any company for proof of insurance before they touch a tree on your property. We're happy to show ours.
When we quote a removal, that price covers taking the tree down safely, protecting your home and landscaping, and hauling away all the debris so your yard is clean when we leave. Stump grinding is usually a separate add-on, since not everyone wants it — though plenty of folks tack it on to finish the job in one visit. You can read more about that on our stump grinding vs. removal post.
